Why Uniforms are Important for Firefighters
Firefighters have several different uniforms that they might wear, and each one is designed specifically for a certain task they’ll encounter. Firefighting involves not only the actual battle against blazes, but also desk work and tasks around the station. All firefighter uniforms are important in their own way. The firefighter’s clothing needs to provide safety, be practical, and communicate a message.
Firefighters do much more than actually fight large scale fires. This means they need uniforms that are comfortable enough to wear around the station and while performing non-fire related tasks. Furthermore, each firefighter is issued a formal dress uniform for official events.
Fire Fighting Uniforms
Uniforms for fighting fires are made to protect the individual from smoke and heat while still being practical. They also help with identification. The uniform includes a strong helmet to keep their heads safe, visors to protect their eyes, heavy duty jacket and pants, fireproof gloves, and steel toed boots.
Many jobs at the site of the fire still need a uniform that protects, but it may not need to be as heavy duty. Blauer offers the Crosstech Colorblock Emergency Response Jacket that is ideal for any first responder. When paired with the Hi-Vis B.Dry Rain Pants, the wearer is protected with a waterproof and windproof material that is still breathable. The bright yellow hue and reflective trim makes them more visible to others.
Station Downtime
Station uniforms are created for the non-threatening aspects of a firefighter’s job. This outfit comprises a shirt such as the B.Cool Performance Polo Shirt. It comes in a wide range of colors, and it has a professional look while still being comfortable. It is made of a moisture wicking fabric that is breathable. This shirt can be matched up with the Side Pocket Polyester Trousers. The stretch waistband and relaxed fit make them perfect for downtime. They come in navy and black. These clothes allow the firefighter to be comfortable, yet they are still easily recognized for their occupation.
Formal Uniforms
Firefighters attend many official events where a formal uniform is necessary. This could be funerals, parades, public meetings, or any other occasion where a professionally dressed appearance would be important. Dress uniforms have a military style to them and include a blazer, dress shirt, dress pants, official hat, and dress shoes or boots.
Often a firefighter may find themselves in a position where a formal dress uniform would be too much, but their downtime clothing won’t portray the professional image they are looking for. This would be when they are working desk jobs where they will still come in contact with the public. The SS Nomex Shirt is ideal for such situations. The epaulets, pleated pockets, and banded dress collar combine to give a polished look. The longer shirt tails keep it tucked in nice and neatly. The shirt comes in both long and short sleeves.
