Personal Computer – Security Tips

Protecting your PC from threats should be given due importance by all users. Every system is vulnerable to threats from the web and through other means, which makes it crucial to follow a set of procedures to ensure that these threats do not materialize. Here are few pointers that can help users in protecting their systems.

Need for a good antivirus

Always make sure you have good antivirus software installed on your system. Periodically run virus scans to ensure your PC is malware free and safe from other virus threats. It is also crucial to update your antivirus package on a regular basis to keep up with new versions of spam and malware that hit the internet. It is a much safer bet to use a paid version as they have better scanning properties. However, if you are reluctant to go in for a paid version, there are also several free versions available on the internet that can do a decent job as well.

Use a good quality web browser

The use of a good quality web browser also plays an important role in protecting your PC. Always try to use the latest version of your favorite browsers, as studies have revealed that the latest versions are more adept in keeping the malware at bay. There are several useful browsers that the user can choose from. The two of the most recommendable options are Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome.

Use of USB devices

A virus attack from the use of USB devices is a common problem nowadays. People use USB devices to plug in to various systems and then use the device on their own system. This increases the threat of virus attack that could really harm your PC in the long run. Hence, make sure to scan your USB devices with the latest antivirus applications before you begin using its contents.

Periodically delete browsing history

A lot of users tend to store passwords on sites they frequent to gain quick access. While this is usually safe, it also makes your system vulnerable if a hacker decides to hack into your system. Hence, make sure to delete browsing history from time to time to avoid such threats.

Empty recycle bin

Make sure to delete files and folders completely from your recycle bin. Many users delete files but fail to empty the recycle bin on a regular basis. This may cause security issues especially if some of the information remaining in the bin is of a sensitive nature.

Do not store password information on your system

A lot of users tend to store password information on their system of various accounts. Quite a few people even store their bank account information, which they require while carrying out transactions online. This can be very unsafe and should be totally avoided. It also pays rich dividends to frequently change the passwords of some of your most important online accounts to prevent the possibilities of theft or misuse. In case, you feel it is required to have your passwords stored on your PC, make sure they are well protected and encrypted.
