Do you think your bathroom looks too small or you want to make it more functional? Or do you just need some more space for toiletries? Do not worry, this problem is easy to solve. The key to this is the design of your bathroom. By making the right choices when designing or refurbishing it, you could make some extra space or at least make it look bigger or neater.
The main word that comes to mind when designing a small bathroom is smart. So if you feel that you are not experienced enough to take on the challenge to redesign your small space, make sure to get some extra help from professionals. And if you lack time or money for that, you could read this text and find out some important design tips that we gathered from the best in home decor, in order to help you find the most suitable solution for your particular case.
So, what to do:
- Create additional storage space
Instead of stuffing your toiletries in large cabinets, showcase them on open or floating shelves, or use ladder to give personality to your bathroom, a place that is usually quite simple in design. Sink skirts are also a nice option, since they hide cleaning products from sight, thus making other nice flacons and your colorful towels shine. Instead of the mirror alone, use a cabinet with mirror to put the essentials in it. Have in mind that floor-to-ceiling cabinets will make your bathroom look larger, and they are very practical if you have a part of the wall just for them.
- Keep it simple and functional
First of all, throw out everything that you don`t need in your bathroom. As for the rest, try to store all your products in cabinets instead of displaying them. Stackable baskets are also a nice solution for this, as they can be placed underneath cabinets or above the washing machine. As for cabinets themselves, they can also be placed above the toilet, and if you place the sink on the adjacent wall, you could save some serious space.
- Make the space visually bigger
Glass shower wall is translucent and this automatically removes the visual barrier of shower door or curtain. Another way to achieve that your bathroom looks larger is either to use mirrored surfaces anywhere you can, or to use one big mirror as a centerpiece. For an additional tip, take a look at our no. 6.
- Colors matter!
In fooling your eye to perceive some room as spacious, colors have a huge impact. So be careful when you choose your palette. Bright colors (particularly light blue or light green) are the best choice for tiny bathrooms, as they simulate natural light and thus create a roomy atmosphere. Also use different patterns or textures to make it look more natural and give some depth to it. Remember that of all colors, white is the one always associated with cleanliness, but it is off-white that is perceived as clean, but looks more natural and not sterile. If you have chosen a simple tone scheme, implement some pops of color here and there – a vibrant bath robe or trendy rug, anything that shows your personality, really.
- Focus on accents
If your bathroom is small, try to shift the perspective and place the view on one single focal point. Make it big, so choose one particular trendy and bold piece and make it a centerpiece. Also, an additional trick is an oval-shaped sink. It provides more space than other shapes, especially rectangular. Oval shape also gives a natural, soft look and is, additionally, quite trendy. Another way is to play with mosaic tiles, e.g. cover one wall with them to create a dramatic atmosphere by contrasting them to other tiles.
- Playing with light
When bathroom is small, everything counts, even light. Allow natural light as much as you can. If you cannot use it to make room airy, use lighting fixtures: recessed lighting illuminates any reflection, especially if it is placed around the large mirror.
