How to Find Affordable Car Insurance

Car insurance provides a valuable safety cushion for many drivers. While car insurance won’t reduce one’s risk of an accident, it can reduce the negative financial repercussions of a vehicle accident. While car insurance is an important tool in modern society, it can be very expensive in some cases. The following article provides simple tips and tricks on how one can find affordable car insurance.

 Understanding Car Insurance

It’s important to understand how modern automotive insurance companies work. While insurance companies play an invaluable role in modern society, they usually operate as a for-profit business. Because of this, insurance companies must charge more in premiums than they provide in benefits. This can result in situations where insurance companies will not want to cover some drivers.

For example, several research studies have shown that people with a history of automotive accidents are likely to be in automotive accidents in the future. Because of this, automotive insurance companies will often charge higher rates to people with a history of accidents. If a driver has a very negative driving history that includes DUIs and other serious offenses, it may not be possible for him or her to get automotive insurance with a regular company. Fortunately, there are a number of ways one can reduce monthly insurance premiums.

Understanding At-Risk Factors

Insurance companies have discovered that there are a variety of factors that can increase or decrease the risk of an individual being in an automotive accident. For example, individuals with a low credit rating may be at a higher risk of accidents than people with a high credit rating. In addition, individuals with a criminal history may be at a higher risk of being in an accident in the future.

When getting vehicle insurance, it’s important to make sure that one doesn’t have any negative marks on a credit report history. For example, bankruptcy or excessive late bills can usually lower one’s credit rating significantly. In many cases, insurance companies will use this as factor when determining insurance premiums.

It’s also a good idea to get a criminal history expunged, if possible. In many cases, court systems in the United States will allow an individual to have certain negative records removed if he or she completes a diversion program.

How to Reduce Insurance Premiums

If an individual has received a DUI in the past, insurance premiums may be very high. To reduce insurance premiums after receiving a DUI, it’s a good idea to find ways to show an insurance company that one is now responsible. This can include defensive driving courses, attendance of an AA program, alcohol diversion programs and much more.

It’s also possible to reduce one’s insurance by having someone else register as the primary driver for a vehicle. For example, a vehicle can be registered in the name of a spouse, parent or teenage child. However, this may be considered insurance fraud in some areas.

It’s also possible to reduce insurance premiums through the use of monitoring devices. With a  driving performance monitor, insurance companies can monitor an individual’s driving habits in real time. Based on this information, an insurance company may be able to lower an individual’s monthly insurance premiums.

  • Many thanks for your post. I’d really like to write my opinion that the price of car insurance will vary from one insurance policy to another, for the reason that there are so many different issues which bring about the overall cost. Such as, the model and make of the automobile will have a significant bearing on the cost. A reliable old family motor vehicle will have a less expensive premium than a flashy racecar.
