How To Enhance My Alexa Ranking

If you are here reading this article, then you probably searched for “How To Fake Alexa” or searching for ways to Enhance My Alexa Ranking and thereby trying to get more advertisers or sponsors to your website. In this post I am going to tell you if you can really “Fake Alexa Rank” and also some ways to “Enhance Your Alexa Rank” and at the very end try and explain why in the world am I even writing this article!!!!!

First things first, let us try and understand what Alexa Rank really means and why (if at all) is it important to have the lowest possible rank. If you are new to my site or havent had a chance to go through the “Naked Series Of Bloggers” series published earlier this year, I would like to quote some lines from many professional bloggers for my question below:

Do you believe in Alexa rankings for measuring traffic?

Olawale Daniel answered “No! You’d have to show me how Alexa rank is going to affect my blog’s traffic. Alexa is just a tool for measuring the amount of people who comes to your blog through the Alexa rank toolbar, so, any other visitors without the toolbar won’t be counted. I discredit that believe.”
Barry Wells says “Alexa rankings are good but for measuring traffic…. Not really as they aren’t current. I’ve started using Getclicky which is excellent as you can track visitors whilst they’re on your sites.”
Bill Dorman is of the opinion “I believe in it because Brankica at Live-Your-Love says I should; but with my current model it is not something I pay attention to.”
Adrienne Smith also has similar thoughts – “I think it’s a good indicator but nothing is ever spot on.”
Harleena Singh shares “It is a good guide to follow, though it’s not always 100% accurate and keeps fluctuating a great deal. I try to not let it really affect me!”
Kristi Hines limits her opinion by saying “I sometimes use it to make a general comparison between two sites to see which one is more popular.”
Christian Hollingsworth adds “It’s a good “general” guide to see basic increases in traffic. Not 100% accurate. It’s like asking your Mother if your website looks cool. Usually biased or skewed information 🙂 ”
Carolyn says “Not entirely. Alexa rankings seem to have little relation to my actual traffic.”

So Why Bother?

As you can clearly see from the comments above by these awesome bloggers, none of them believe Alexa ranking is of any importance or significance to a blog’s performance. So why worry about How To Enhance or Improve your Alexa Ranking??

Well, I beg to differ!!!!! Not that I am contradicting to any of them above, but from my own personal experience, I wish to let you know that my Alexa ranking has actually adversely affected my blog’s revenues. Of course, being relatively new in this blogging field as compared to many others, my thoughts and statements can easily be criticized and I want to tell you that I always welcome positive criticisms. Please do not hesitate to tell me I am wrong 🙂

When I started my blog, my alexa was around 20mil, same as any new blog that gets started. It took me a while to build some presence and traffic and bring it down to less than 500K. Once I started with the Naked Truth series, the ranking further decreased and went to around 200K early this year. That is when I started getting mails from advertisers and marketers to feature their adverts or banners on my site. Back then, I wasn’t sure if I want to open up my website for random publicity, but then thought, why not?? So, I started accepting some offers and that in turn lead to many referrals and further more sponsors added up.

Everything was going well, there were many writers who approached me to publish their guest articles, which I did and gave away precious links to them from my website. Until recently, I did not bother much to notice what is my Alexa ranking, but when I did, what I saw was devastating. From the past month I have been seeing a constant increase in my rank and today it stands at 350K!!!!!!!!!! What made me look into this was a decline in traffic and also some sponsors withdrew their long-standing text links saying that my rank was going skywards.

This clearly means that if a blogger is trying to monetize his website and earn some revenue for all his devotion and time spent on writing unique articles, then Alexa Rank does act as an important factor for the earning potential of the blog.

How To Improve Alexa Rank

Now, let us see how to actually enhance your alexa rank and what it really takes to do that. There are several ways which have been discussed on many blogs out there on this and I would like to focus on a few of them which I feel are particularly important.

1. Alexa Toolbar/Widget –

There are many theories and opinions about the validity of this, but from what I read, it should really work. Olawale also mentions the same in his comment above. If your blog is being read by a visitor who has installed Alexa toolbar for his browser, then it automatically sends your site stats to Alexa, thus improving your site buzz. Now, a blogger doesnt have control on who visits his blog and of them, who has installed the Alexa toolbar. All one can do is install it yourself and make your blog as your home-page. Everytime you open the browser, wait for your site to open and  allow the toolbar to send the site statistics. I know what you are thinking now…and YES, Alexa considers stat updates from your browser too!!!!!

Install Alexa Toolbar extension for Chrome here.

2. Build Quality Back Links –

There are many DoFollow and Good PR blogging communities out there where you can register and build some quality back links to your website. Some of them are BlogEngage, BizSugar, IndiBlogger, DigitalPointForum, BloKube and MMOSocialNetwork. Some of them do charge a nominal fee for membership but if you are into writing and enjoy being published in such professional forums, you shouldnt think twice.

3. Write About Alexa –

By now, you must have guessed why I am even writing this article…with the keywords How To Enhance Alexa Ranking mentioned all over it. Most of the bloggers out there are looking for ways to improve their alexa rank and if your article is well indexed with the proper keywords, you get more traffic. Bloggers who are searching for ways to improve, will most probably already have installed the Alexa toolbar, and there goes your website stats to Alexa!!! Of course be certain to share quality stuff in your article without duplicating content from other sites. You can even provide URL links to other websites having similar articles about Alexa Ranking thereby providing proper courtesy to the writers.

Over To You

So, what is your personal experience with Alexa and the ranking given to your website? Do you believe it helps you improve your website or is it just a number that no one really cares about? Do you follow any other method to Enhance your Alexa Rank? I would love to hear from you, do share your thoughts by leaving a comment below. Thanks for reading.

  • I agree with Kristi that you can compare two sites with their alexa. I don’t think that if you have good alexa means you have a great site. Alexa counts the visits from the browsers where he alexa toolbar is installed. So that you can see that tech blogs, seo blogs, mmo, blogging blog are having good alexa ranks because most of the guys open these blogs having Toolbar installed on their pcs or lappy so that rank goes up faster. On the other side the site which writes about other things lets say about beauty products or something has not good alexa. Its my assumptions only.

  • I’m not faking anything; it’s all me, the good, the bad and they ugly in it’s most simplest form.

One of these days maybe I’ll be on board w/ all the stuff that is supposed to go along on your road to success; but I’m ok to just write for now.

If you build it (write it) they will come…….:).

    Thanks for the mention.

  • Hey Praveem,

Nice post and thanks for including my thoughts on this subject.

I don’t have any paid advertising on my blog so I can see that if that’s an area you are interested in then you might want to pay more attention to your Alexa ranking. I do get requests for that but I don’t allow it on my site.

Sorry yours went up but I have a feeling you’ll have that under control again in the near future so I’m going to wish you the very best with that.

    Hope you’re enjoying your week.

    • Adrienne – Thanks for reading this article and happy that you left your comment.

I can see how many advertisers might be interested in your website due to the quality of content and the good PR that you have already.

I also had second thoughts of advertising on my site, but then caved in. Let me see how it goes for a while and hope it picks up again.

Thanks and have a wonderful week ahead.

  • Hey Praveen,
The Alexa ranking is based on Backlinks as well as people who have the Alexa toolbar on their browser. My site was ranked as low as 74K Worldwide at one time even though I never had more than 10k visitors per month.

My strategy for lowering Alexa is simple. Commenting on 10 different blogs or websites a day. All you have to do is consistently add backlinks to new blogs or websites and watch as your Alexa ranking goes down. Of course, once you stop doing this your Alexa will go back up. Alexa can be gamed and is not accurate for traffic measuring.

I no longer concern myself with Alexa rank anymore, it is what it is. 🙂

    Take care.

  • Interesting post Praveen!

Thanks so much for including my thoughts within your post. 🙂

Yes indeed, Alexea is useful if you have paid advertisements I think and seeing your good rank is when people approach you. My Alexea ranking has also been going up some days and down on some, and I really have no idea as to why that’s happening.

I’ve also read somewhere that some people manage to increase their rank by clicking or making others click on their posts, which is something that’s not nice at all and makes one wonder if it’s all really worthwhile then.

I do have the Alexea widget installed, but that’s mainly to compare sites I visit and see their ranking if they are worthwhile to include in my posts. It used to bring me down if my blog showed a downward trend sometimes, but not now because I understand that somewhere somethings can be manipulated on it too, according to what I’ve read.

Thanks for sharing and letting us know more about how we can increase our ranking. 🙂

  • Hi Harleena – Nice to read your comment and glad it could be of some use to you.

Yes, the ranking seem to be changing every so often and it is hard to understand what is the logic behind it. From what I have read, it mainly depends on the amount of organic traffic to your blog each day, but am sure your blog has enormous amount of readers who visit not only to read your latest but refer back to your archives (just as i do)

    Have a wonderful day ahead.

  • I have always added fresh content from my side. I also start a e-book about my site description Tally Software. But My question is If Alexa Show my site ranking in top 10 lacs site, why the alexa toolbar shows my site ranking more than 10 lacs.

  • I never belive on Alexa, Its just for show off, Last day i left a comment on Traficgeneration cafe and left same comments.
Its just for Show off, Now a days advertiser want visit and Impression and i can show you some sites they have good alexa but visit is very less.
So don’t focus on alexa and all. Increase Visitor thats it.
    Hope you are agree too.

  • Hi Praveen,

Thanks for including me in your post and linking to my blog, much appreciated 🙂

I can see how your Alexa ranking is benefiting your business as you are looking for the paid adverts etc, which I’m sure will come back to you in time. However I never accept adverts on my blog and have recently declined some offers. Each to their own Praveen, our blogs our choices.

My ranking a few months ago was 95K but I’m currently having some health issues and haven’t been able to get any work done. I’m not able to sit up for long so haven’t even been blog hopping and during this time I’ve seen my ranking drop from 95K to 194K as of today. That may sound alarming to some but it’s the least of my worries at the moment.

I sometimes feel that people focus on chasing the numbers and work hard to get a good ranking only to lose sight of other work. I know that I done that myself for a while but (when I get back to work) I aim to focus on my product creation as well as blogging for knowledge and traffic.

My Alexa ranking really doesn’t trouble me at all these days.

Best of luck to you though Praveen I hope you reach the goals you’re aiming for 🙂

    Barry

    • Barry – It is great to have you around and read your thoughts on my topics.

Yes, as you have rightly mentioned, our blogs our choices, and as you might have read already in my post, i was hesitant at first, but then caved in. Let me see how long this goes, and if it does affect my blog and readers in any adverse manner, I will surely stop accepting further offers.

It is good to know about your personal experience with your blog and how a rank or rating may least affect. Thanks for sharing the info.

I hope you get well soon and be able to blog all day long.

  • Hi Praveen, Thank you for including me in this wonderful article. Justin’s comment just gave me the insight I was looking for. I have been away on vacation for the past 10 days and away from the Internet. I published articles on schedule when I was away but didn’t comment on other blogs as I was away from the Internet. My traffic on my blog actually soared when I was gone (hmmm…) but my Alexa rank dropped from 75K to 85K. Now I’m thinking that it was because I wasn’t commenting on other blogs.

I agree with Adrienne, as I don’t accept advertising on my blog, I don’t care much about Alexa. Numbers such as Alexa and Klout can drive you crazy so it’s important to not worry about them too much!

I think it’s excellent that you’re accepting ads, Praveen. I hope it works out really well for you. Your blog is great and I’m sure that your Alexa rank will continue to improve.

    • Hi Carolyn – Welcome back and I am sure all your readers and followers missed having you around (like me).

I too have experienced the same, and I am sure the comments on other blogs have a direct impact on alexa ranking. I usually see that it increases by around 10K over every weekend since I am not blogging or commenting during the time. Nice you brought that up in your comment.

Yes, i started accepting adverts and sponsored posts in my blog, if you do not mind, you can direct those who approach you to my blog 🙂 I am sure they will be disappointed at my traffic and rankings, but just giving it a try.

Thanks for the comment Carolyn and have a good week ahead.

  • Alexa Rank actually does not matter. It’s all traffic that you see in analytics. But for advertising and in case you want to sell your site. It makes a lot of difference. And yes it also makes an impression on many bloggers and users who understand what alxa Rank means. So in my opinion Alexa Rank does and at the same time does not make any difference.
imran recently posted…Hostgator Hosting Review and Discount CouponMy Profile

  • Well, I have stopped believing in Alexa for site analysis. Because, it’s never accurate..
It shows site links late every time.
    It shows wrong traffic count..
But last week, I asked a blogger if she can write a guest post on my site..
    She said – NO
REASON : She only writes for those blogs having Alexa Rank less than 80,000.
    I feel bad…
What I feel now – one should not believe in Alexa Rank Analysis..
But its a kind of show off..
So, maintaining a good Alexa rank is also necessary..

Well, that is sad that the writer is only concentrating on specific blogs with less Alexa rankings. Surely, your blog could have given the writer more exposure than a less ranked one, it all depends on how these decisions are made and at what time.

I agree with you that we still need to care about these if we are trying to get writers to contribute or even to get sponsors.

      Have a wonderful day ahead.
Praveen Rajarao recently posted…Promote Your Blog At DMCMy Profile

  • Hey Praveen,

Like most other bloggers, I don’t really care about Alexa (but, I do check it).

If you don’t plan to monetize your website through ads, I think you shouldn’t worry about it (You should still use platforms like Buy sell ads which focus more on monthly views and visitors rather than just on Alexa ranking). Alexa isn’t accurate at all, well to some extent, it can be, largely depends upon how much of our audience has the Alexa toolbar installed.

Anyways, thank you for the post,

I agree with you that there is a specific need for the ranking and I should say that from the time I have written this article, my rank has come down by almost 40K. I think I am on the right track here and hope to get more advertisers in the process.

  • Hey Praveen,

I used to worry about my Alexa rank (I actually used to worry about a lot of things related to the internet world) Not anymore. 🙂
What matters to me is how many people I’m able to help via my blog. End of story. High Alexa, good traffic are all great, but if I’m not in this business to help others those things are worth nothing to me.

    cheers
