5 ways the right technology can help you to stay fit

We are living in a digital world. Smartphones and constant access to the internet are changing human physiology, posture, and psychology. We are addicted to the stream of endless information and entertainment within the palms of our hands. But we also feel guilty about wasting so much time online.

Social media and being hooked to your screens can affect your physical and mental health. So, using the right health apps can act as a motivation for you to take care of yourself. The key is to use technology strategically.

More and more people are using fitness-tracking technology to take care of their body and mind. Wearable devices such as smart watches are becoming common. There are also many apps available in the market that can help you keep track of your health. But with so many health-improving technologies, it is not easy to find those that are truly beneficial. It is difficult to differentiate them from the ones that are nothing more than a gimmick.

Today we are going to share 5 of our favorite health technologies and how they will improve your overall well-being. They will also help you stay fit. So without any delay let us check out our 5 ways to stay fit with the right technology:

1- Improve your diet:

Let’s be honest; it’s not easy to keep track of your nutrition when you are leading a super busy life. But, what if we told you that there are certain apps that can help you to be mindful about your diet? Apps like MyPlate Calorie Tracker and Fooducate help you stay on the right track so that you know what food is good for you and what’s not.

Research supports the fact that keeping a food journal can help you lose weight. Downloading an app that documents your daily food intake can be the first step towards improving your eating habits. Here is a list of 10 apps that can help you manage your weight effectively and motivate you to eat better and more intelligently.

2- Monitor your heart beat

If you’re new to exercise and training, then it is important to understand how your body responds to intense physical activity. And the best way to gauge the effectiveness of any exercise routine is to monitor your heart rate.

The heart beats a certain amount of times per minute. Having a low resting heart rate means that you have a strong heart that doesn’t require a lot of effort to pump blood into the body. However, you should monitor your maximum heart rate because it is the fastest your heart can beat safely. A heart rate monitor is a small wearable device that can be worn with a band around your chest or on your wrist. It is then connected to a smart watch or an app that provides you with the readout.

Once you have the basic data of how your heart responds to exercise, you can start setting goals for more effective training sessions.

3- Reduce eye strain

Eye strain or asthenopia is a real deal breaker for those who spend their days working behind a computer screen. It is caused due to reduced blinking and bright lights of a screen. Many students and office going people suffer from this problem. However, you can use technology to reduce the extended use of screens. Sounds impossible, right?

Well, it’s not. There are many ‘eye rest’ apps available that send reminders to take short breaks. They enable you to do simple eye exercises so that your eyes suffer from less physical fatigue.

4- Sleep well

Many people don’t realize the importance of a good night’s sleep. It is the foundation for a healthy and productive life. While it may seem important to watch just one more episode of your favorite TV show before hitting the bed, it leads to a disrupted sleeping pattern.

Using a sleep tracking app helps you with a lot of sleep-related issues such as sleep posture and snoring. It also keeps a count of how many hours of quality sleep you got last night.

Take time and research about the different types of sleep monitors available in the market and choose one that suits your needs. While certain wearable devices like Fitbit may work for some, they can be relatively uncomfortable to wear throughout the night.

Understanding how many hours of sleep you are getting can help you to instill many positive and life-changing habits for the years to come.

5- Exercise your brain muscles

Many people care for their body and exercise daily to lead a long and healthy life. But what about brain exercises? According to research by Neuroscience, your brain reaches its peak performance at the age of 25 and starts declining afterwards. For most of us, this is something to worry about. But there is better news. No matter how old you are, you can train your brain muscles to keep your cognitive health in optimal condition.

There are many brain training apps that let you take a dementia test to know if you are facing early signs of dementia or brain fog. Once you get the results, you can start taking specifically tailored courses to keep your brain muscles active and healthy.

Conclusion:

We have analyzed a study by the University of Washington.  According to it, people have an easier time meeting their health goals when the data is presented to them in a clear way. Many apps and wearable devices help you visualize your progress in graphs and charts which make it easier to stay motivated. When you find meaningful and actionable information in the palm of your hands, it is easier to remain engaged with your healthy routine.

Tracking apps with user-friendly data dashboards can help you reach your goals. So, identify your needs and download the right technology to stay fit and active!

  • Hey Alycia,

Love it when technology can help us live a better and healthier life (rather than promoting addictive behavior and unhealthy habits).

My personal tip: I’m rather conscious about my sleep so I have programmed my phone to turn off internet connection 1 hour before I go to bed. This way I’m not tempted to ruin my sleep with blue light from mindless phone browsing.

    Thanks for the post.

  • Hi ,
Read your nice article and strongly agree with your this point “the importance of a good night’s sleep” I myself have realized after working in software field where it is always deprived.

  • Really a nice post. Being a doctor I know very well the role of a healthy diet in our fitness as rightly said here. Nowadays people are not following a healthy diet plan only coz of their tongue taste which make them sick.
