From Drab to Fab: 5 Tips for Livening up Your Living Room

When you think of your living room, do you imagine it could be better? Do you wish it had more personality, more color, or a better ambience? The living room is a space that many families take for granted. As the center of your home, it should show the personalities of the people who reside in the home. It should welcome visitors and offer comfort for everyday enjoyment. If you are looking for a new way to liven up your living room, take these tips into consideration.

Adding Color to Create Atmosphere

Most interior designers will tell you, color is the first step to livening up a room. When you move into a new home, most of the homes on the market have blank white walls. This is done on purpose. When homes are sold, they are not just selling the space, they are selling the possibilities. As color is taste specific, realtors want the families to have the ability to imagine their home in the color of their choice. This doesn’t mean you have to keep the walls white.

By adding color to your walls, you can create a mood that reflects you and your family. If you prefer surrounding yourself in bright vibrant colors, splash it on the walls. If you want to create a cozy romantic space, choose colors that are deeper and richer. How you want your home perceived should reflect in your color palette. If you don’t want to commit the entire room to a color, you may want to consider just adding color to an accent wall. This offers a pop of color without dedicating the entire room to it.

Opening the Room with Windows

If you are looking for a way to change the entire atmosphere of your living room, consider changing your windows. Whether you choose new blinds, drapes, or replace the current windows with larger windows, you can change the entire feel of a room. If you want more light without adding lamps, consider taking out the small windows and having larger windows installed. Many homeowners will add sliding glass doors to add more light and open the room up during nice weather. Larger windows offer a better view as well as gives the impression that the room is larger than it actually is.

Group Your Furniture

Many people believe that spacing your furniture further apart helps to keep a room accessible. This creates a lot of open space that makes the room seem empty and less inviting. By grouping your furniture, you can create sitting areas while keeping the access needed to outlets, light switches, and keep the room easy to navigate. By grouping your sofa, loveseat, and chairs and separating them with tables and lighting, you can create an inviting space that is functional and cozy.

Don’t Be Afraid to Be Eccentric

If you want your home to reflect your multi-faceted personality, don’t be afraid to be eccentric. By adding collectibles, art, sculptures and décor that matches your personality or the personality of your family, you can create a space that is both creative and interesting. Don’t be afraid to let your guests get to know you through the knick knacks in your home.

Keep it Soft and Comfortable

If you want to avoid feeling like you live in an institution, keep your living room comfortable. By utilizing throw pillows, plush seating, or even floor pillows, you can create a space that is both stylish and comfortable. Try adding pillows and cushions of varying colors and patterns to add personality and a bit of eclectic style to your living room. Today’s décor should be full of color and texture to keep the room inviting and interesting to everyone who uses it.

If you feel your living room is lacking the style that reflects you and your family, it is never too late to change it. Take a look at what your living room says to you and make the changes needed to make it shout what you feel. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to liven up your room if you make the right choices and add your own personality to the space.
