Why A Blogger Should Become An Affiliate Marketer

When I started this blog, I started to look into every possible avenues to monetize my website. I enrolled for multiple CPC programs and started hosting sponsored ads on my site, but of course, never realized any revenue from any of these sources. Later realized that monetizing isnt the ultimate objective of owning a blog, I gained friendship of some awesome bloggers, got added into those prestigious circles and did earn some followers to my blog.

All said and done, I still run quite a few Advertising programs on my site though I should admit that none of them have generated any promising returns on a continuous basis for me.

Affiliate Marketing on the other hand was an eye opener for me when I first enrolled to the LinkShare Affiliate Program back in June of last year – My First Affiliate Program Signup and then there was no stopping to the numerous programs I enrolled for. But I do have to say that Amazon has been quite a good revenue generator so far and their program is straight forward and easy to understand and start referrals from your site.

Why To Become An Affiliate Marketer

The business will usually pay the affiliate marketer a percentage of the sales from their website/blog or it may even be a fixed price slabs for each sale done. It is quite easy to set up an online affiliate marketing business for a blogger who already has a website running with consistent traffic generated.

All it takes is to sign up to one of the numerous available affiliate opportunities and they will usually scan the website and see how well the site is formed and what traffic is generates before approving the application.

There is No Need to create your own product or service – this is one of the most important reasons one should get into affiliate marketing. The effort and originality involved in creating a product or service is tremendous and if one doesnt have the skill or time to do so, it doesnt really matter these days, just become an affiliate of an existing business who have their own products to offer.

All the products sold from your affiliate links will be shipped by the business to the consumer directly and you just act as a middle-man to bring them together to seal the deal. Doesnt this sound easy?

No Initial Investment Involved – To start a business of your own you will need to put up a minimum outlay upfront to even think of setting up an online store and create your product. But not everyone is blessed with the opportunity of having huge chunks of cash on hand to set something big.

For becoming an affiliate, all you need is a website and a good amount of followers and readers of your articles and posts (make sure to avoid spams of course). Getting this up and running will take a computer, a high speed internet connection and some spare time which I am sure most of us have plenty of.

Plenty of Affiliate Networks to Choose From – Getting hooked onto an affiliate network is very easy and all it takes is just fill up the application form with valid details and submit it. Once onto a network  you will need to pick and choose the business/product/service you would like to promote on your website and apply for each one of them. The business will scrutinize your application form and either approve/deny your request based on their own algorithm to analyze your site statistics.

Once approved, all you need to do is promote their products on your site by writing product reviews and sharing personal experiences and thoughts on the same.

Some of the popular affiliate networks are ClickBank , Click2Sell and CommissionJunction(Vendor Approval Required). Apart from these there are several other individual businesses that offer affiliate sign-ups like Amazon which has huge potential to earn for any blog niche. Amazon also offers several banners and widgets that a blogger can include on his website to promote products like the ones below. You can choose from Amazon HomePage banners or Product Link banners where you can promote individual products by writing reviews about the same.

LivingSocial Affiliates – LivingSocial and Groupon have become the most popular sites for coupons and deals these days. Groupon affiliate is available once you sign up for the CommissionJunction network whereas LivingSocial has it’s own affiliate program. It allows 2 types of promotions, one is to promote signing up for LivingSocial and the other is to promote a specific deal in the website. They also have a very active FaceBook page where you can get all your questions answered by the affiliate managers.

If you visit my LivingSocial page, you can see that I have many promotions running which I have configured to be auto-posted to my website using the RSS Feeds from the business. It is really simple to use and it saves a lot of time for me to write up drafts and publish them daily.

Start your own Affiliate Program – Not only do bloggers become affiliate marketers, but if you have an eBook to sell or a service to offer from your website, it is easy to setup an affiliate for your site and promote other bloggers to become affiliates for you.

Recently, I got an invite from Justin Mazza of www.mazzastick.com to become an affiliate to promote his latest eBook Overcoming Fear. See how easy it is for anyone to promote their business as well with the help of Affiliate Marketing, all you need to do is sign up as a Vendor to one these networks and start selling products/books /services.

The networks also offer banners and widgets which you can ask fellow bloggers to promote on their websites like the ones below of the eBook by Justin.

  1. So true Praveen, Amazon is a steady source of income for me. I think because the majority of people online are familiar with them. HostGator has been a great one for me as well followed by ClickBank. It takes some time to find the right products to promote. I am still trying to figure it out. 🙂

Thanks a million for mentioning The Overcoming Fear program. It has been selling really well so far. It is a great product and we gave as much as we could to producing it.

    1. Justin – Thanks for stopping by and I am sure your eBook will do great in the coming days. I am glad to share this with my readers.

I am also a great fan of Amazon affiliate program and hostgator, both have generated considerable income to me in the past few months.

  2. Informative post Praveen!

I do agree about affiliate marketing doing very well for some people, but being a freelance writer I haven’t really given it much thought. Perhaps the lack of time is one aspect besides the other various factors.

However, I do know a little about Amazon and HostGator as well and do share their links as well, though nothing much in detail. I guess I better get started and learn more about affiliate marketing and how to go about things, as it comes from you. :)Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    1. Harleena – Good to see you back here. I am certain that you should really start thinking about marketing on your wonderful site. Surely you will gain some extra money on the side. (unless you dont want it !!! )

Maybe a little extra time devoted for all the reviews and posts for the affiliate is all that it takes and you should be good to go. Let me know what you think and how it goes.

  3. I have mixed feelings about so many ads.  I’m not crazy about promoting many of these products, and I currently only have an affiliate link to BlueHost.  I tried Amazon years ago and made no money.  It took way too much work to promote their products, since I like very esoteric books that only a few people will buy anyway.  Other friends reported similar in regards to Amazon. I’m glad affiliate marketing is working for you, however.

I once clicked on one of your Living Social ads because they were promoting dresses for girls, and I needed to buy my daughter a dress.  I think I stopped when asked to register or fill out some sort of form.

  4. Praveen, these are all excellent reasons to become an affiliate and I’ve had more success with Amazon than any other monetization mechanism. Google Adsense makes only pennies on my site! I think blogging is much more fun and has a point if it makes some money! I don’t want a lot, just my tiny share of the billion$ flying around the blogsphere. 🙂
